Got to see Bela Fleck and the Flecktones last night. Wow, what an experience! And I didn't think we'd make it in because they were totally sold out! In fact, it was my fault that I didn't have tickets. I'd known about the concert for moths and did mean to get tickets, I just kept forgetting. It was a huge disappointment when I found out on Monday that they were sold out, and a big lesson learned. But that's another story for another post... :-)

I ended up making a sign asking for tickets and standing outside the Carolina Theatre asking passer-bys for tickets. It was actually the first time I'd done that, and after standing there for about 20-30 minutes, I found I wasn't alone. A mother and her son (I'm guessing) came and said "Well, I guess we have to get in line behind you". After them, two more guys showed up looking for tickets. Nobody else had a sign, though!

One group of people passed me and one of the women, in mid sentence, looked at my sign and said "awww!", and then proceeded to finish her sentence and continue to walk by. That amused me. "Awww"? I need tickets, I'm not homeless!

As more and more people passed and no tickets were revealing themselves, I was starting to get down. I was planning on starting to offer passer-bys who intended to go double what they paid for their tickets. Just as I was starting to get really discouraged, some guy walked up to me and said that he had one ticket (I needed two). I jumped on the opportunity, thinking one was better than none.

His one was followed by a mother and son who had the two extra tickets I was seeking. Two tickets, together, first row of the first balcony. Woo Hoo! And she only wanted (actually, demanded) the exact price she had paid for them. YES!!!! Now, I had three tickets. That problem was solved by selling the extra one to the mother and son who were "waiting in line" behind me, and as an added bonus, they got my sign, too.

I can't explain what a relief it was to have those tickets on my hand. And it was worth it... the concert was amazing! Listening to  Bela Fleck play is like watching a magician. He is just so fucking fast! I don't know how he hits all those notes. He did a solo where he roamed through classical, jazz, slow, fast, a whole range of everything. It was crazy.

Victor Wooten is also totally unbelievable. His ingenuity and skill on the base are just mind boggling. Listening to him jam, whether it be the solos he did, or jamming with Bela, or just jamming in the background... wow. He gets suck sounds and such feeling out of that base guitar. And he also did some really cool stuff with his electronics, "building" a song note by note, and creating these amazing loops.

All in all, it was a great night and after the ticket fiasco, it was a nice surprise to be able to get in and get such amazing seats. Missing opportunities like this is something I strive to never do again!
